The solid shapes and curves bring flexibility and harmony to this Regence model. The sheathed jambs, with molded panels adorned with carved motifs interlaced with foliage, are generously curved at the top. At the center of the framed panel of the entablature, rests a shell trimmed with delicate flowers. Garlands of flowers flow from either side of this motif. Molded spandrels adorned with foliage frame the front. The shelf, with a slight curve, underlines the same free flowing movement of the overall design of this mantel.
The Regence style was developed between the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, a period in the history of France called "Regence" (1715-1723). This artistic style is characterized by new freedoms of forms and themes, as it attempts to break away from the hieratic style of Louis XIV and announces the extravagances of Louis XV. New decorative patterns appear: decorative lush plant motifs, espagnolettes, female masks, and motifs from the animal repertoire. This fireplace is very characteristic of this style. Indeed, the large molding running under the entablature is reminiscent of the Louis XIV Bolection style, while the shell with flowers in the center of the front is a harbinger of the Louis XV style. The curved shelf, with a strong central projection is a testimony to the emancipated design of the Regence style.
The name of this model is inspired by Adrien Maurice de Noailles, third Duke of Noailles from 1708, and Marshal of France. A Soldier with an extraordinary military career, he participated extensively in the War of Spanish Succession, and those of Poland and Austria. Under the regency of Philippe d'Orleans, he also had political responsibilities. On September 15, 1715, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Finance of the Polysynodie. On January 28, 1718, the Duke of Noailles resigned this office to integrate the Regency Council. During the reign of Louis XV, he maintained a primary position and was appointed Minister of State in 1743.
